Mack Trucks and Volvo Trucks Continue to Sponsor the Share the Road Program

Mack Trucks and Volvo Trucks announced their sponsorship of the Share the Road program for 2013. The announcements were made during the American Trucking Associations (ATA) Management Conference & Exhibition in Las Vegas, NV. America’s Road Team utilizes drivers with proven safety records to spread awareness about highway safety and foster understanding about the crucial role that trucking plays in the economy.

Mack Trucks announced it will again sponsor the American Trucking Associations’ Share the Road highway safety program in 2013. The MACK® Pinnacle™ Axle Back sleeper model, painted the signature yellow for safety, is an unmistakable symbol of Share the Road.

“Mack Trucks is dedicated to making America’s roadways as safe as possible, and we consider the Share the Road program to be a vital partner in that effort,” said John Walsh, Mack vice president of marketing. “The professional drivers involved in the program educate millions of Americans about safe driving practices when sharing the highway with commercial vehicles. We also want to recognize all of the fleets that support the participation of their drivers in Share the Road. The life-saving messages they deliver are critical to highway safety.”

Designed to enhance the safety of America’s roadways by teaching car drivers how to safely drive around large trucks, Share the Road uses professional truck drivers with exemplary safety records to educate people about potential blind spots, safe following distances, truck stopping distances and other important topics.

Traditionally, the drivers have spread this information through demonstrations to local media, students, community leaders and motorists across the U. S. As part of its program commitment, Mack provided Share the Road with a SmartWay-certified MACK® Pinnacle™ Axle Back model equipped with a MACK mDRIVE® automated manual transmission and a 13-liter 505 horsepower Mack MP8 engine, featuring Mack ClearTech™ SCR technology and 1760 lb. ft. torque.

The 70-inch high-rise sleeper also features Mack Road Stability Advantage by Bendix® with Adaptive Cruise Control, which helps the driver avoid potential collisions by integrating throttle, engine brake and foundation brakes into the cruise control function.
The Pinnacle is the third truck that Mack has provided to Share the Road since it became the founding sponsor in 2001.

Volvo Trucks will continue its sole sponsorship of America’s Road Team in 2012. The Road Team travels the country with this Volvo VNL 780 and the American Trucking Associations’ Image Trailer, delivering messages about the highway safety and the essential nature of America’s trucking industry.

Volvo Trucks has sponsored the program for more than a decade.

“Volvo Trucks’ support of America’s Road Team is one of our proudest partnerships,” said , Magnus Koeck, Volvo Trucks vice president, marketing and brand management.  “The work that America’s Road Team does nationwide is indispensable and there is great synergy between the team and Volvo’s commitment to safety.”

Members of the America’s Road Team, called Captains,  speak to lawmakers, government officials, students, regulators and other drivers to increase awareness about the essential nature of America’s trucking industry and the importance of highway safety.  The Captains have logged millions of miles behind the wheel without an accident and are chosen only after a rigorous selection process.

“The trucking industry could not ask for better ambassadors than the America’s Road Team Captains,” Koeck said.  “Volvo believes that education is the cornerstone for driver safety, and we are certain that the Road Team positively affects countless lives every year.”

As part of its ongoing committment to the America’s Road Team program, Volvo supplied the Captains with a VNL 780 tractor, which they use to transport the ATA Image Trailer, a mobile experience trailer used during Road Team presentations.

The Road Team truckfeatures a fuel-saving Volvo I-Shift automated manual transmission and the following active safety technologies:

  • Volvo Enhanced Stability Technology (VEST) by Bendix, a full electronic stability program that assists drivers in maintaining control during emergency maneuvers.
  • Volvo Enhanced Cruise (VEC), integrating the most advanced collision avoidance technology with the truck’s cruise control.
