Dana Launches Spicer® 175 Series Single Drive Axle for Global Heavy-Duty Applications

New Axle Offers Lowest Gear Ratio for Optimum Engine Downspeeding

Dana Incorporated (NYSE: DAN) launched its new Spicerâ 175 series single drive axle, offering the industry’s lowest numeric gear ratio, 1.95:1, for optimum engine downspeeding. The axle is ideal for European heavy- duty vehicles and is well suited for various global applications, including North American linehaul trucks.

The Spicer 175 series is Dana’s most efficient and reliable single heavy-duty drive axle and is supported by a host of performance-optimizing features, including a differential case design with a premium integrated ring gear for reduced weight and oil churning losses, and precision AdvanTEK® gearing for improved efficiency. Weighing 27 kilograms less than previous products, the Spicer 175 series maximizes freight tonnes per kilometer and is approved for up to 52 tonnes gross combination weight rating.

“Dana engineering teams are continuously innovating to enhance vehicle performance and optimize up-time for applications anywhere in the world,” said Mark Wallace, president of Dana Commercial Vehicle Driveline Technologies. “The Spicer 175 series incorporates established Spicer axle design elements while adding pioneering features to further advance vehicle efficiency and reduce total cost of ownership.”

Offering a broad range of gear ratios, from an industry-low 1.95:1 to 3.42:1, the Spicer 175 series features Spicer High-Power Density™ AdvanTEK® technology to support engines up to 600 hp and 2,750 Nm of torque. The new axle also includes high-strength pinion bearings, which allow for greater lifespan under heavy loads. An autonomous lube management system requires less lube while utilizing a patent-pending meter to optimize the amount of lube flow to the high-efficiency bearings.

The new heavy-duty single drive axle series can also be paired with the Spicer SPLâ 250 and 350 driveshafts, which are designed to meet the durability requirements for faster axle ratios and lower engine speeds. Also available for use with the Spicer 175 series single axle are the Spicer Compactä Series Plus 2060 and 2065 driveshafts, featuring a weight reduction of up to 10 percent and the potential to increase the life of the driveshaft by as much as 25 percent.

New Karsan Midibus Features TM4® Electric Motor and Inverter from Dana Incorporated

At the 67th IAA Commercial Vehicles, Dana Incorporated (NYSE: DAN) and vehicle manufacturer Karsan announced the availability of the Karsan ATAK electrified midibus featuring Dana’s TM4®SUMO™ MD electric motor and inverter.

Karsan, a manufacturer of light commercial vehicles, shuttle buses, and city buses, is focused on providing contemporary product and service solutions for mass transportation. The company has been developing sustainable electric-driven vehicles since 2015 and introduced its first prototype electric minibus, the Karsan JEST, in 2016.

“Globalization, increased environmental concerns, and the need to reduce operating costs continue to drive our innovative thinking,” said Christophe Dominiak, chief technology officer for Dana. “As Dana expands its capabilities and the scope of product offerings for electric vehicles, we are pleased to be working with industry leaders like Karsan, which has extensive vehicle development and manufacturing expertise.”

The electrified bus is based on the Karsan ATAK eight-meter low-entry bus platform and is equipped with a TM4 SUMO MD electric motor and inverter. The TM4 SUMO MD is composed of a high-torque, permanent magnet variable reluctance (PMVR) direct drive motor and automotive-grade power electronics. The new motors with the PMVR technology for external rotors can deliver 45 percent more torque and operating speed than previous motors in the same compact package, while reducing cost.

PMVR works by adding specially-designed soft magnetic composites (SMCs) next to the magnets. SMCs are produced through a new forming process and fabrication method by TM4. The SMCs also allows the use of simpler and smaller magnets that are easier to manufacture and that uses less rare-earth in the fabrication process to account for 25 percent savings in magnetic material.

This new bus platform is able to operate with a range of up to 300 kilometers on a single charge. Dana is also a key contributor in the development of the vehicle control software, through the supply of hardware and services related to its TM4®NEURO™ 200 vehicle control unit platform and SynApps development tool.

Dana exhibited the TM4 SUMO MD, along with other Spicerâ Electrified™ with TM4 solutions for the commercial-vehicle market.
